The number of mass shootings in America has increased dramatically over the last decade. Savannah is taking its own steps to curb gun crimes.
In June, reports emerged that Savannah Mayor Van Johnson is worried about the number of shootings occurring in some of Savannah's busiest areas. He wants to propose a curfew for downtown business owners so they can limit the potential for any further violence after dark.
According to the mayor, the state’s constitutional carry law is at fault for the rise of gun violence. According to Johnson, “We cannot control that when you have a situation of gunfire, everyone’s pulling out guns,” Johnson said. “This handcuffs our law enforcement efforts, and it makes all of our public areas at any time a potential crime scene.”
The mayor has promised to meet with tourism and business officials about the possibility of implementing a curfew, as well as any other options available.
Types of Gun Violence
In recent years, gun violence has become one of America’s most pressing issues. There are many different types of gun violence, including:
These occur when a gunman enters a school or college campus and opens fire on students and teachers. Over the past few decades, there have been numerous high-profile school shootings across the country. Some of these include Virginia Tech University, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, and just in May 2022, Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas.
A mass shooting is defined by the FBI as a single incident when four or more people were shot and/or killed during an active shooter event. These events can and have happened in public places like movie theaters, shopping centers, nightclubs, and houses of worship. These incidents often include the shooter’s use of a semi-automatic weapon such as an AR-15. A 2019 Pew Research study found that 4% of US gun deaths were caused by semi-automatic rifles, a category that includes AR-15-style rifles.
This occurs when someone buys guns legally from a licensed dealer but then sells them to criminals without reporting it to authorities. Traffickers are diverting guns into the illegal market, usually across state lines, taking advantage of the fact that some states have weak gun laws and then reselling guns in states with strong gun laws.
This activity is also called straw purchasing. Georgia ranks 15 out of the 50 states in gun deaths.
Gangs are groups of three or more individuals who commit crimes together. Gang activity is frequent among young men between the ages of 15 and 24. Gang members carrying and using guns are common.
Suicide is the act of taking one’s own life. Guns can be used as a method of suicide.
When someone kills another person, this is called homicide. Homicides are often committed using guns or other firearms.
